Beacon Hill, Highclere

Our first visit to this hill fort since 1981. Recent changes to the grazing policy have greatly improved the habitat for chalk wildflowers, including a good range of orchid species. The slope is very steep, but we will ascend slowly, examining the plants as we go. The walk will be about 1.5 miles but 140m vertically. Beacon Hill car park is signed from the A34 junction for Tot Hill Services. Weather permitting, there is a possible visit to a nearby nature reserve in the afternoon. If staying, bring a picnic lunch.
