Meet at Tidgrove (RG25 3EN via farm road) by kind invitation of Raleigh Place, who has a habitat creation scheme under Higher Level Stewardship and manages his land to encourage breeding Stone Curlews, Lapwings, Linnets and Skylarks, and butterflies including Small Blue. Uncultivated areas are reverting to chalk grassland. There is another newly-created lake and the rich arable flora includes Venus’s-looking-glass, Dense-flowered Fumitory and Red Hemp-nettle. We hope to be joined by Harold Makant, Natural England’s adviser for the HLS.
