Geology at Nettlebed Common

Leader: Prof Peter Worsley. Meet near the bus shelter on The Green, to look at the geology of the Common (SU702868). Nettlebed is a small outlier of the Lambeth Formation above the Chalk. It is an abandoned industrial landscape, from which chalk, clay, sand and gravel were formerly extracted. A bottle oven for the manufacture of bricks and tiles survives.
