Leader: John Sharpe
Meet at the Fisherman’s Cottage Kennet Side Reading RG1 3DW. Entrance to the car park is from Canal Way off Orts Road (SU 72674 73473), only accessible by car from the west end of Orts Road. The car park will be open at 10am. The area is well served by buses, or it is about a 20 minute walk from the station. The best route is to walk from the station via Duke Street and then follow the Kennet towpath downstream to the pub.
Advance food orders are not required as the pub owner is food oriented and used to dealing with groups coming in.
The theme of the walk will be urban community gardens, it will be around 3 miles and take in the Kennet Mouth, if the Loddon Lillies are in flower, Newtown Community Garden, Reading Old Cemetery originally a garden Cemetery now managed for wild life, where we will meet Theresa Verney Brooks, Erleigh Road Community Garden, a small garden managed for wild life, John’s garden, and a garden that was the Reading school Headmaster’s garden which is being re-modelled for NHS staff, where we will be shown around by Beth Scott. Some parts remain wild. All the surfaces will be good and level with no stiles.
