The reserve is covered by a large dune system which stretches down to a long sandy beach. There were sheets of dark red Early Marsh Orchids (Dactylorhiza incarnata ssp cocchinea) and purple Southern Marsh Orchids in the hollows between the dunes. A Small Blue butterfly was spotted on a flower head of Kidney Vetch. Most of the party enjoyed a picnic on top of a sand dune, while the remainder returned to the Prince of Wales for lunch, where they were treated to a brief history of Kenfig by the landlord. In the afternoon, both groups walked down to the beach. A single plant of Maiden Pink was found beside the path. Unusual plants close to the sea included Sea Stock, the pink and white striped Sea Bindweed and Sea Holly.

    RDNHS members at Kenfig

    Sea Bindweed

    Early Marsh orchid

The annual coach outing on Saturday 13th June was to Kenfig National Nature Reserve near Swansea.
