Ren\u00e9e Grayer led a walk at the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust Reserve at Bartley Heath on Saturday 3rd<\/sup> September. Highlights of the trip were the Marsh Gentians, which were flowering in profusion. The official count the previous weekend had been 974 plants. Other interesting plants on the heathland included Saw-wort, Sneezewort, abundant Devil\u2019s-bit Scabious and Petty Whin. An interesting feature of the trip was the number of white-flowered plants, including Heather, Cross-leaved Heath, Betony and Marsh Thistle. A wetter area with small ponds had Lesser Skullcap, Tufted Forget-me-not and Marsh Speedwell. In the woodland ride, Broad and Narrow Buckler Fern were growing together, showing the more upright posture and paler foliage of the Narrow Buckler Fern. Also in the woods were Lady Fern and Scaly Male Fern, which showed the characteristic dark mark at the base of the underside of the leaves. A number of lizards were basking in the sunshine and 2 Roe Deer were disturbed in the woods. Recent wet weather had brought on a selection of fungi, including Cep and Orange Birch Bolete.<\/p>\n
