DESCRIPTION:Leaders: Julia Cooper and Andy Bolton \nMeet at Tidgrove (RG25 3EN via farm road) by kind invitation of Raleigh Place\, who has a habitat creation scheme under Higher Level Stewardship and manages his land to encourage breeding Stone Curlews\, Lapwings\, Linnets and Skylarks\, and butterflies including Small Blue. Uncultivated areas are reverting to chalk grassland. There is another newly-created lake and the rich arable flora includes Venus’s-looking-glass\, Dense-flowered Fumitory and Red Hemp-nettle. We hope to be joined by Harold Makant\, Natural England’s adviser for the HLS. \nMembers only\, please let Julia know by Friday 14th if you intend to come so she can give numbers to Raleigh.

We will explore the chalk springs marking the source of the River Lambourn and then visit BBOWT’s Watts Bank Reserve\, where there are stiles and a steep slope. We will walk along wide flowery rides through conifer plantations to a local hotspot for the Grayling\, one of Britain’s fastest declining butterflies and recently upgraded to Endangered on the GB Red List. Despite the gloomy national situation\, the local Grayling population is thriving. \n
