DESCRIPTION:Mick Jones MBE (BBOWT) \nHear the extraordinary story of Dancersend Nature Reserve and its woods and chalk grasslands\, how Charles Rothschild saved this valley rich in wildlife and his family later passed it to the Wildlife Trust (BBOWT) who have made it even larger. The story also illustrates changing ideas about nature conservation over the last hundred years since Dancersend was established. DESCRIPTION:Leader: Jan Haseler \n** Update\, Friday 6 January ** \nMeet at Hill’s Meadow car park near the north-east side of Reading Bridge at 10:15. In the hope that the worst of the rain will have gone through before 11:30\, we will change the event around. We will start with a walk around Christchurch Meadow and King’s Meadow\, looking at winter wildlife. Then we will go to the western end of View Island at 11:30\, where a volunteer will tell us about the new Reading hydro project. If you only wish to listen to the talk\, you can make your own way to View Island. (Coming from Central Reading\, follow the south bank of the Thames eastwards from Reading Bridge. Cross the river at Caversham lock. Reading Hydro is near the north-east end of the weir. Coming from Hill’s Meadow\, follow the footpath eastwards along the north bank of the Thames until you come to the bridge to View Island. Cross the bridge and follow the footpath back to the western end of View Island\, near the end of the weir.) \nThe location under Reading bridge

They are associated with dead or decaying wood\, providing important ecosystem services such as nutrient recycling and carbon sequestration. This talk describes the perhaps surprising results of a long-term survey of saproxylic insects at Dinton Pastures Country Park.

DESCRIPTION:A walk around the Kennet\, canal and gravel pit lakes near Burghfield\, starting at the Cunning Man Pub\, RG30 3RB (SU680707). There’s plenty of parking but registration plates must be recorded in the pub before the walk to avoid a fine. The walk will be about 3 miles long\, mostly on the level on footpaths and lanes\, may be very muddy\, occasionally may be icy or very wet\, short stretches of road without pavement. Please let Viv know by email by Jan 10th if you are planning to come\, and whether you plan to have a meal afterwards\, as the pub may need to be informed if there are large numbers. \n*Update 16th Jan* \nThe walk will be going ahead at the planned time\, 10.15 on Wednesday\, from the Cunning Man pub. Due to flooding in the area it will be on a modified route\, along the canal towpaths only\, with some views of the gravel pits. There should be birdlife\, fungi and other interest\, including the pub fare afterwards! The pub is open again after a temporary closure yesterday. \nPlease bring waterproof footwear\, wellies if possible\, and perhaps a hiking stick if wished\, as the path will be very wet and muddy. \nPlease use the contact form for further details.
