SUMMARY:Hunting diatoms in Siberia: Lake Baikal\, its hidden diversity and those who have searched
DESCRIPTION:Dr David Williams (Natural History Museum) is researching the systematics and biogeography of diatoms\, especially in ancient lakes\, and Circum-Pacific distributions. \nLake Baikal is the world’s largest\, deepest inland lake\, containing nearly 25% of the world’s freshwater. It is well known as an ancient lake\, being some 30 million years old and well known for its diversity\, with numerous birds\, fishes\, and various invertebrates\, many of which are endemic to the lake. Rarely do the accounts of the lake’s diversity include micro-organisms\, the ‘invisible’ component. During the 1990s\, David was part of a Darwin Initiative Project to document the diatom diversity of this extraordinary lake. The Darwin Initiative is a Government funded programme to assist countries or places rich in biodiversity but with less than adequate resources. Shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union\, Lake Baikal in Siberia\, Russia was recognised as one such place – and in spite of various efforts by the Soviet scientists\, it had hardly been examined for its diatom diversity. \nScience is a distinctly human endeavour\, its players coming from various backgrounds\, having various temperaments\, desires\, goals and so on. David shall give an account of our own Baikal quest\, which was not just simply to document the diatom diversity\, but to explain how it got that way and to address how some of the people before us approached this challenging task. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Leader: Mike Harrison \nMeet at Wokefield Common Nature Reserve car park\, on the south side of Goring Lane\, just to the south of Burghfield Common. This is a walk to find and identify (not collect!) fungi. Wokefield Common is an area of former heathland with a mix of conifers and broadleaved woodland. Bring a hand lens if you have one.

SUMMARY:Saving England’s Lowland Juniper
DESCRIPTION:Matt Pitts (Plantlife) \nJuniper is facing extinction in Southern Britain with whole colonies dying out. Since 2009\, Plantlife has been trialling in-situ techniques to catalyse regeneration from seed at trial sites including Aston Upthorpe (recently visited by RDNHS). SUMMARY:Stanford Dingley
DESCRIPTION:Leaders: Julia Cooper and Ian Duddle \nMeet by Stanford Dingley Church (SU575717\, RG7 6LS) for a walk of about 4 miles through meadows and woodland to the north-west of Stanford Dingley and returning along the river Pang. There are a few short moderate slopes and the ground may be muddy in places. If you intend to come please contact Ian or Julia by via contact form  by 7pm on Monday 14th in case we need to make any changes\, and to confirm if you would like lunch afterwards at the Old Boot in the village. They would like to know numbers in advance but we don’t need to pre-book menu choices. (Menus are on their website but they will also do baguettes on request.) There is space for 6-8 cars near the church and alternative parking at the pub\, about 0.3 miles away via a footpath. \n
