In the hope that the worst of the rain will have gone through before 11:30\, we will change the event around. We will start with a walk around Christchurch Meadow and King’s Meadow\, looking at winter wildlife. Then we will go to the western end of View Island at 11:30\, where a volunteer will tell us about the new Reading hydro project. If you only wish to listen to the talk\, you can make your own way to View Island. (Coming from Central Reading\, follow the south bank of the Thames eastwards from Reading Bridge. Cross the river at Caversham lock. Reading Hydro is near the north-east end of the weir. Coming from Hill’s Meadow\, follow the footpath eastwards along the north bank of the Thames until you come to the bridge to View Island. DESCRIPTION:A walk around the Kennet\, canal and gravel pit lakes near Burghfield\, starting at the Cunning Man Pub\, RG30 3RB (SU680707). There’s plenty of parking but registration plates must be recorded in the pub before the walk to avoid a fine. The walk will be about 3 miles long\, mostly on the level on footpaths and lanes\, may be very muddy\, occasionally may be icy or very wet\, short stretches of road without pavement. Please let Viv know by email by Jan 10th if you are planning to come\, and whether you plan to have a meal afterwards\, as the pub may need to be informed if there are large numbers. \n*Update 16th Jan* \nThe walk will be going ahead at the planned time\, 10.15 on Wednesday\, from the Cunning Man pub. Due to flooding in the area it will be on a modified route\, along the canal towpaths only\, with some views of the gravel pits. There should be birdlife\, fungi and other interest\, including the pub fare afterwards! The pub is open again after a temporary closure yesterday. \nPlease bring waterproof footwear\, wellies if possible\, and perhaps a hiking stick if wished\, as the path will be very wet and muddy. \nPlease use the contact form for further details.

DESCRIPTION:Leader: Rob Stallard \nIf the weather is forecast to be good we will explore some of the ancient trees of Savernake Forest near Marlborough. If not so good we will explore Bucklebury Common. Please register your interest for either or both the walks by Friday 17th by contact form and also state if you would like to offer/share lifts. The decision will be made on Saturday 18th. (Last year the weather was not good enough for Savernake). \nOption 1: Savernake Forest\nThe Grand Avenue starts at a sharp left turn from the A4 just before the hill down to Marlborough. Drive 0.6 miles along the avenue and park at the first small car park on the right (SU 21746 67571). Although 35 miles away it should only take about 50 minutes from west Reading using M4 and A4. We will look at a number of named veteran trees (mainly oak) for which the forest is famous. Gentle walk of 3.5 miles. Some places muddy and slippery with gentle slopes. A pub lunch will be available at the Bear Hotel at Hungerford on the A4 (RG17 0EL\, SU 33901 68903) just by the roundabout to the town centre. \nOption 2: Bucklebury Common\nPark at the Cottage Inn pub car park on Broad Lane (RG7 6QJ\, SU 54261 68598). Bucklebury Common is an extensive area of mixed woodland and recently restored heathland. There are also a number of veteran trees. Muddy footpaths likely. Walk of about 4 miles on mainly gentle gradients. Lunch will follow at the Cottage Inn.

DESCRIPTION:Leader: Jan Haseler Meet at the south-east end of Manor Road\, Goring for a walk of about 3.5 miles along the Thames Path to BBOWT’s Hartslock Reserve\, where we hope to see Monkey Orchids and their hybrids with Lady Orchids\, together with Grizzled and Dingy Skippers and Green Hairstreak butterflies. Almost all of the reserve is on very steep slopes\, with stunning views across the Thames valley.

DESCRIPTION:Leader: Rob Stallard (Tel. 0118 961 4277 / 07766 036 797) \nOur first visit to this hill fort since 1981. Recent changes to the grazing policy have greatly improved the habitat for chalk wildflowers\, including a good range of orchid species. The slope is very steep\, but we will ascend slowly\, examining the plants as we go. The walk will be about 1.5 miles but 140m vertically. Beacon Hill car park is signed from the A34 junction for Tot Hill Services. Weather permitting\, there is a possible visit to a nearby nature reserve in the afternoon. If staying\, bring a picnic lunch. \n

Uncultivated areas are reverting to chalk grassland. There is another newly-created lake and the rich arable flora includes Venus’s-looking-glass\, Dense-flowered Fumitory and Red Hemp-nettle.
