DESCRIPTION:Leader: Robert Stallard \nThis is the fourth year where Savernake has been an option\, hopefully fourth time lucky! \nThe Grand Avenue starts at a sharp left turn from the A4 just before the hill down to Marlborough (SU 20988 68342). Drive 0.6 miles along the pot-holed avenue and park at the first small car park on the right (SU 21746 67571). Although 35 miles away it should only take about 50 minutes from west Reading using M4 and A4. We will look at a number of named veteran trees (mainly oak) for which the forest is famous. It is a gentle walk of about 3 ½ miles. Some places muddy and slippery. Lunch will be available at the Bear Hotel at Hungerford on the A4 (RG17 0EL\, SU 33901 68903) just by the roundabout to the town centre. The hotel would like our lunch orders in advance\, the menu is available here. Please register your interest here by Saturday 15th with lunch choices and indicate whether you would like to accept or can offer lift(s) – as it is quite a long journey.

DESCRIPTION:Leader: John Sharpe \nMeet at the Fisherman’s Cottage Kennet Side Reading RG1 3DW. Entrance to the car park is from Canal Way off Orts Road (SU 72674 73473)\, only accessible by car from the west end of Orts Road. The car park will be open at 10am. The area is well served by buses\, or it is about a 20 minute walk from the station. The best route is to walk from the station via Duke Street and then follow the Kennet towpath downstream to the pub. \nAdvance food orders are not required as the pub owner is food oriented and used to dealing with groups coming in. \nThe theme of the walk will be urban community gardens\, it will be around 3 miles and take in the Kennet Mouth\, if the Loddon Lillies are in flower\, Newtown Community Garden\, Reading Old Cemetery originally a garden Cemetery now managed for wild life\, where we will meet Theresa Verney Brooks\, Erleigh Road Community Garden\, a small garden managed for wild life\, John’s garden\, and a garden that was the Reading school Headmaster’s garden which is being re-modelled for NHS staff\, where we will be shown around by Beth Scott. DESCRIPTION:Leader: Rob Stallard \nBucklebury is an ancient settlement on the upper reaches of the River Pang. This walk of about 3 miles will explore a stretch of the nascent river as well as climb up to see mature woodland to the north of the village. SUMMARY:Newtown Common
DESCRIPTION:Leader: Rob Stallard  (Tel.  0118 961 4277 / 0776 036797) \nNewtown Common is a little known nature reserve directly south of Newbury. It is a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation with a wide range of plants and animals. The mixture of open acid heath\, together with areas of pine and oak woodland with birch scrub as well as streams\, gives a variety of habitats. In a 3 mile walk we will explore the heathland and a valley to the west. The site can be muddy in places. Newtown Village Hall car park is accessed from a sharp turn onto a bumpy track at the junction of Well Street and Jonathan Hill. We will start on the plateau of Greenham Common and include part of Bowdown Woods. Greenham and Crookham Commons lie on a ridge between the rivers Enborne and Kennet.
