Look for the ornate red-brick Victorian pumping station on your left\, just before the lane climbs steeply through beech woods. Turn into the drive\, then sharp left into the car park at HP23 6LB. With broad-leaved woodland\, sheltered chalk grassland and ex-arable fields being restored to chalk grassland\, this is a very rich and varied reserve. The reserve consists of open heathland with ponds left from gravel extraction and woodland. It is grazed by cattle and ponies. DESCRIPTION:Leader: Rob Stallard \nMeet at the village car park by the recreation ground (OX10 9JD) adjacent to the A329 by the bus stop (SU 59054 83879). Depending on the weather we will either walk up to Unhill Wood on the Moulsford Downs or else walk along the river bank towards Streatley. The Downs walk will be nearly 5 miles with a steady climb and descent so it will be more strenuous than recent walks. Lunch will be at the Beetle and Wedge riverside inn. DESCRIPTION:Leader: Robert Stallard \nThis is the fourth year where Savernake has been an option\, hopefully fourth time lucky! \nThe Grand Avenue starts at a sharp left turn from the A4 just before the hill down to Marlborough (SU 20988 68342). Drive 0.6 miles along the pot-holed avenue and park at the first small car park on the right (SU 21746 67571). Although 35 miles away it should only take about 50 minutes from west Reading using M4 and A4. We will look at a number of named veteran trees (mainly oak) for which the forest is famous. It is a gentle walk of about 3 ½ miles. Some places muddy and slippery. Lunch will be available at the Bear Hotel at Hungerford on the A4 (RG17 0EL\, SU 33901 68903) just by the roundabout to the town centre. The hotel would like our lunch orders in advance\, the menu is available here. Please register your interest here by Saturday 15th with lunch choices and indicate whether you would like to accept or can offer lift(s) – as it is quite a long journey.
