SUMMARY:Biological invasions: learning from the past and looking to the future (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Professor Helen Roy (Centre for Ecology & Hydrology)  Zoom meeting\nBiological invasions can threaten biodiversity and ecosystems\, particularly through their interactions with other drivers of change\, such as climate warming. Sharing knowledge on invasive non-native species between countries is essential to advance understanding and enable successful implementation of management strategies. The talk provides an overview of the ways in which this information can be used to inform science\, policy and conservation. \nThis will be an online Zoom meeting. Members will receive a link for the meeting in the email newsletter. If you are not a member but would like to sample our talks on Zoom\, please contact Julia on rdnhszoom@btinternet.com and ask for a free link.

SUMMARY:Geology at Nettlebed Common
DESCRIPTION:Leader: Prof Peter Worsley. Meet near the bus shelter on The Green\, to look at the geology of the Common (SU702868). Nettlebed is a small outlier of the Lambeth Formation above the Chalk. It is an abandoned industrial landscape\, from which chalk\, clay\, sand and gravel were formerly extracted. A bottle oven for the manufacture of bricks and tiles survives. The chalk was mined and subsidence features are common. For further details please use our contact form.

SUMMARY:Walk at Aldworth
DESCRIPTION:Meet at St Mary’s Church\, Aldworth for a walk of about 3 miles\, followed by an optional lunch at the Four Points. Should there be any problems with parking at the church (SU554794)\, it would be possible to arrange a ferry service from the pub car park to the church. The pub closes at 14:30\, so we need to be there by 13:00\, so a prompt start to the walk would be helpful. If you would like to eat at the pub\, please give your choice of starter and/or main to Marion by Friday 12 November. Marion can be contacted via the contact form. The pub website is here and the menus are available online.

SUMMARY:Fungus Foray at Paices Wood
DESCRIPTION:Leader: Mike Harrison\nMeet at Paices Wood Country Park main car park off the A340 south of Aldermaston (SU588639). This is a walk to find and identify (not collect!) fungi at this very varied site\, with wet and dry woodland\, heathland and lakes. Bring a hand lens if you have one. We would like to restrict this walk to members only\, because our fungus walks are often over-subscribed\, which makes it hard for the people at the back to hear or see the leader.

SUMMARY:Marlow Common
DESCRIPTION:Leader: Inge Beck\nMeet where the Chiltern Way crosses the road at SU 822866 (Click on this link to see map of meeting point and pub). There are several parking places along that road. Enjoy a pleasant 3.5 mile autumn walk round Marlow Common through beech and mixed woodland. We will be exploring three reserves looking for fungi\, visiting a clay pit and the WWI trenches. The area can be muddy in places. There are no stiles.\nIn a change to our earlier plan\, the option of lunch after the walk will be at The Olde Bell at Hurley. Inge needs to let the pub know numbers and food orders from the bar menu (https://www.theoldebell.co.uk/dining/our-menus/) on the preceding Monday so if you would like to stay for lunch please contact her direct (details in the October newsletter) or use this site’s contact form for further information by Sunday if possible. Inge will need confirmation of your choices by 4pm on Monday 18th.

DESCRIPTION:Leader: Adrian Lawson\nMeet by the gate across the road at the southern end of Circuit Lane (SU692717). Come for a four mile walk through the Coley and Southcote meadows\, past Fobney Island nature reserve and along the Kennet and Avon canal and the Holy Brook.
