DESCRIPTION:Leader: Prof Peter Worsley. Meet near the bus shelter on The Green\, to look at the geology of the Common (SU702868). Nettlebed is a small outlier of the Lambeth Formation above the Chalk. It is an abandoned industrial landscape\, from which chalk\, clay\, sand and gravel were formerly extracted. Enjoy a pleasant 3.5 mile autumn walk round Marlow Common through beech and mixed woodland. We will be exploring three reserves looking for fungi\, visiting a clay pit and the WWI trenches. Come for a four mile walk through the Coley and Southcote meadows\, past Fobney Island nature reserve and along the Kennet and Avon canal and the Holy Brook. The walk is mostly flat but may be muddy if wet. It has many habitats of interest and a surprisingly varied landscape\, with the chance of rare migrant birds on some of the pools.
