For all ages there will be sweep netting\, a hoverfly hunt and a short guided walk. This activity will not take place if it is raining. \n8:15 to 10:30pm Evening Bat Walk and Moth Trap\nMeet at the main car park by the ranger station for the bat walk. Bat detectors are available for use during the walk. The walk will finish by the Cedar of Lebanon in front of the Mansion House where there will be a moth trap set up. Then stay on to see the results of the moth trapping. Please bring a torch. \nThis event will not take place if it is raining or very windy. \nPlease note that there is a 24 hour parking system at the Mansion House car park so if you are coming a little later just for the moth trapping then you either need to go into the Mansion House\, enter your registration number\, and have a drink or park at the main car park and walk up. \nThese two events are being held jointly with Wild Tilehurst. SUMMARY:River Thames at Sonning
DESCRIPTION:Leader Renee Grayer. \nMeet at the far end of Sonning Lane (B4446) off the A4 (SU756753)\, where it should be possible to find a parking space\, which is usually impossible at the Bull Inn at Sonning where we could have our lunch afterwards. From Sonning Lane the walk goes through St Andrew’s churchyard to the River Thames and westwards on the footpath along the river\, where hopefully many water plants should still be flowering at this time of the year despite the drought. The footpath also leads to a Nature Reserve\, which we will explore\, before turning back to Sonning and the Bull Inn for lunch. Please\, let us know beforehand if you intend to come and also whether you need a reservation for the pub lunch.

DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Visitor Centre outside seating area which has views over the lake. The café will be open from 3:00 to about 3:45 for hot drinks\, cake and ice-cream (and water)\, \nThere will be a gentle nature ramble around the lake at 3:30 looking at whatever is around including great crested grebe chicks on the lake. Alternatively\, continue to chat with old and new friends or\, perhaps\, play a game of boules. \nAfter the walk\, at 4:30 we will take tea together. Bring your own thermos (iced or boiling) and comestibles. It would be nice to share the food\, but please remember that we don’t have access to plates or cutlery so it needs to be finger-friendly. \nThe Nature Discovery Centre has two main car parks and an overflow. Disabled Parking is on the reed bed car park\, straight on as you enter the main gate. Although the car parks and toilets are accessible from an outside door until dusk\, the visitor centre building\, shop and café close at 4:00. There are seating areas in the shade and\, in the unlikely event of rain\, cover for picnicking. \nIf you’d like to come but don’t have transport then please contact Tricia. No guarantees that there is a vehicle with spare seats leaving from your area\, but we’ll try to match you up. If you are definitely coming and have a spare seat\, please let Tricia know that too. \n

SUMMARY:Old Winchester Hill
DESCRIPTION:Leaders: Julia Cooper and Ian Duddle \nMeet in the NNR car park on Hayden Lane (///doves.frogs.sleepers\, GU32 1HN nearest postcode). It is signposted off the A32 at Warnford but the sign is partially obscured by branches. The turning is almost opposite the George and Falcon pub (now closed). \nThe reserve of chalk downland\, scrub and woodland has a rich chalk flora including the rare Round-headed Rampion\, butterflies such as Dark Green Fritillary and Chalkhill Blue\, and farmland birds. Circular walk of 2.5 miles with some steep slopes; Rampions near the hill fort can be accessed via level ground. Bring a picnic lunch to eat during the walk which should finish by 3pm; depending on time and conditions we might visit another local site afterwards. There are no facilities at the NNR but a café in the village shop and the Thomas Lord pub (GU32 1LJ or N) both open at 9am in nearby West Meon High Street. DESCRIPTION:Leader: Alan Holmes \nMeet at Paices Wood Country Park top car park\, off the A340 south of Aldermaston. Approaching from the North (Aldermaston village) with AWE on your left\, go past the Young’s estate entrance and you will see a brown sign for the entrance to the park about 300m further on. However it is a No Right Turn\, so you have to drive on to the next roundabout and drive back again when the park will be on your left. As you enter the site\, drive past the car park on the right\, go under the height barrier\, continue along the road for 200m\, then turn left and follow signs to the top car park. We will be looking in particular for the larval stage of dragonflies\, but will do our best to identify other taxa as well. Paices Wood is a good site for adult dragonflies later in the year. \n

We will start on the plateau of Greenham Common and include part of Bowdown Woods. Greenham and Crookham Commons lie on a ridge between the rivers Enborne and Kennet. DESCRIPTION:Leader: Rob Stallard  (Tel.  0118 961 4277 / 0776 036797) \nNewtown Common is a little known nature reserve directly south of Newbury. It is a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation with a wide range of plants and animals. The mixture of open acid heath\, together with areas of pine and oak woodland with birch scrub as well as streams\, gives a variety of habitats. In a 3 mile walk we will explore the heathland and a valley to the west. The site can be muddy in places. Newtown Village Hall car park is accessed from a sharp turn onto a bumpy track at the junction of Well Street and Jonathan Hill. There is limited parking along the access road and in Deptford Lane\, or at the Fox and Goose nearby if you eat there afterwards. The Reserves Officer will give an introduction and access to the marshy northern part of this fenland reserve\, we will then walk round the main reserve and back along the River Whitewater\, about 1.5 miles.  We should see orchids and other wetland plants and a variety of birds\, butterflies and other insects.
